Remote Work & Travel Security

1. Why Remote Security Matters

When working from home or traveling, you are outside the company’s secure office environment. This increases the risk of data exposure, device theft, and network-based attacks.

Following basic security practices helps protect both your work and the organization.

2. Use VPN for Secure Access

  • Always connect to the company VPN when accessing corporate systems
  • A VPN encrypts your internet traffic
  • This prevents attackers from intercepting sensitive data

Make VPN usage a habit before accessing emails, dashboards, or internal applications.

3. Avoid Public Wi-Fi Risks

  • Do not use unsecured public Wi-Fi networks
  • Avoid accessing sensitive systems on open networks
  • If public Wi-Fi is necessary, always use VPN
  • Disable automatic Wi-Fi connection for untrusted networks

Attackers can create fake Wi-Fi networks with the same name (SSID) as legitimate ones. Devices that automatically reconnect may join the attacker’s network without the user noticing.

4. Keep Devices Updated

  • Install system and software updates regularly
  • Enable automatic updates when possible
  • Keep antivirus and security tools active

Updates fix security vulnerabilities that attackers may try to exploit.

5. Use Trusted Certificates Only

Always ensure that your operating system and browser trust only recognized Certificate Authorities (CA).

  • Do not install unknown or untrusted certificates in your OS or browser
  • Only certificates issued by trusted Certificate Authorities should be accepted
  • Be cautious if a website asks you to install a certificate manually
  • Report such requests to the IT/Security team

Installing an untrusted certificate can allow attackers to intercept your encrypted traffic and impersonate legitimate websites.

6. Protect Your Device in Public Spaces

  • Lock your screen whenever stepping away
  • Avoid leaving devices unattended in public places
  • Be aware of people looking at your screen (shoulder surfing)
  • Do not discuss confidential information in public areas

Always stay alert when working from airports, hotels, cafés, or shared spaces.
